Marching, etc...Attendance Policy Attendance at all rehearsals and performances of the Crockett Band is mandatory. Absences will be excused only in case of medical or family emergency and we require written notification from a parent when an absence occurs. Please use common sense when a situation arises; we don't expect you to be there if you are truly ill, but please notify the band office as soon as possible concerning the reason for an absence. Alternate Marching Positions There are a limited number of positions in the marching show, but we will need skilled alternate marchers as we plan for the eventual eligibility of our students. As a result, some students will not march at all and some will be sharing a marching position. No more than two students will share a position, with each qualifying band member bearing an equal responsibility for that position. Rehearsal time will be divided between the two students. Alternating students will be divided into A and B groups and will alternate performances according to a schedule arrived at before the first performance. The students not performing in the show will still be expected to attend all games and perform with the band in the stands. Participation and Inspections A performing ensemble is a cooperative, group activity. If any student is absent, it adversely effects the performance and success of the other students in the ensemble. An unexcused absence from any performance will result in a reduction of the student’s six-weeks grade by 25 points. Inspections will be held before most football games. Each student is responsible for maintaining the uniform, music, and instrument. Summer Band Camp Summer band camp for 2008-2009 starts July 28th through August 22nd. Click Charms to view the schedule. Band members will learn basic marching skills in addition to meeting the Drum Majors, their Field Commanders, and all the other band members. It is important that each band member bring water to marching band rehearsals. Please ensure your student is properly hydrated and ready for the vigors of the hot days. Additionally during school, the band marches after school hours from 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM. Again, bring your own water! Drum Major Summer Camp - During June of each year, our drum major selectees are sent to Drum Major Camp to learn the basics of corps-style drum majoring from current and former drum majors in the state. A week-long camp is held at various locations around the state. The fee for this camp is paid for by the Crockett Band Parents Association. |

FundraisingThere are two systems of fundraising in place in the Crockett Band. Student fundraisers are sponsored for the purpose of providing opportunities for the students to earn funds for the Band Fee and the band's spring trip. The head band director maintains individual accounts for each student in order to maintain an accounting of how much money has been earned or deposited towards the expense of a trip. In addition, the Crockett Band Parents Association operates major fundraising events in order to supplement the operation of the Crockett High School band program. Monies placed in student accounts will fall into two categories: 1) Contributed funds - those funds which have been deposited directly into the student's account by themselves or by their parents for the purpose of paying for any planned trip or other use. These funds are refundable provided that no vendor payment deadline has passed. 2) Earned funds - funds that were deposited in the student's account as a direct result of an organized band or band booster fundraiser. These funds are not refundable; however, they may be transferred to another student's account according to the wishes of the account owner. Any funds left in the account upon graduation or other termination of band membership will revert to the Crockett Band Parents Association general band account. Student Fundraising

This scholarship was set up in 1976 when the Crockett Band represented the State of Texas in the Bicentennial Parade in Washington, D.C. The Band solicited contributions from citizens of Austin and found that it had $10,000.00 left over after paying all trip expenses. These funds are currently invested in a money market fund. The Crockett Band Parents Association, Inc. Treasurer handles this account, and scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors from interest earned each year. Each spring, band students submit an application, and a band parent committee chooses the scholarship recipients. The Johnny Reeves Memorial Scholarship. Johnny Reeves was a baritone player in the band who was killed in the tragic Woodlawn Baptist Church bus accident. At the time of the accident, the Band was in the process of raising money for a spring trip, but after the bus accident, taking a trip was out of the question. The Band voted to place the $1,000.00 in an interest-bearing account and to award a scholarship each year from interest earned. The scholarship has traditionally been awarded to a Senior Band member who plans to major in music. The Briscoe Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is in memory of Kevin and Scott Briscoe who were killed in a car accident in 1978. Any income from the special scholarship investment accounts that is not awarded must be reinvested in the investment accounts. The principal balance of any special scholarship account may not be used for scholarship awards at any time. In order to estimate the number of scholarships to be awarded, the budget committee will obtain a list of anticipated qualified graduating seniors from the Band Director.
